EMERGENCY
HORMONAL CONTRACEPTION
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EHC
Emergency hormonal contraception commonly known as the “morning after pill” is available from our pharmacies. For young women aged 13-25 years old, our accredited pharmacists can assess, advise and if protocol indicates, provide emergency hormonal contraception free of charge under a patient group direction. For those over the age of 25 and without a script, a small fee is charged based on the choice of emergency contraception.
The emergency contraceptive pill is most effective if it is taken as soon as possible after you have had unprotected intercourse, but can be taken up to 72 (levonelle) to 120 (ellaone) hours afterwards, depending on the choice of pill. However, it is strongly advised that the sooner, the better.
If you need emergency contraceptive advice you can speak with a Pharmacist, either in the Pharmacy, or informally by phone. However, we can only provide the form of contraception after a formal, but discreet and private consultation, with the Pharmacist. This is in order to ensure that it is considered appropriate and safe for you in relation to any other possible health conditions or medicines that you may be using.
